Warm colour, visible grain, and light I would rather find than build. I shoot what is already happening in a room instead of arranging it.
Four industries, the same eye in all four.
Hospitality
I love to travel, and I love food and drinks and rooms that somebody has actually thought about. Hospitality still intimidates me a little — the standard is high and everyone in it is particular in a way that shows — and that is exactly why I keep taking the work. It makes me better at the rest of it.
Music
I play guitar. I go to gigs on my own time, I jam with whoever will have me, and I am always a few albums deep into something new. So when a musician describes the thing they are hearing in their head, I am not working from a brief — I already know the feeling they are chasing. Getting that out of someone’s head and onto a screen is the part of this I would do for nothing.
Self-Directed
These are the ones with nobody to answer to. I have watched an unreasonable number of films — that is the actual reason I started doing any of this — and self-directed work is where I get to use what I have taken from them without anyone asking why. It usually ends up further out than anything I would have pitched.
Corporate
I started out doing internal video for a marketing team, so I know exactly how dull this work is allowed to be. That is the appeal. A corporate film has every excuse to be forgettable, which makes the bar easy to see and very satisfying to clear — point the camera at the person rather than the org chart and it stops looking like corporate video almost immediately.
